Mind over pain / L’esprit contre la douleur

At the time of writing this post, my body is in excruciating pain 😖

I thought it was enough to have positive thoughts, being mindful and managing my stress. Well, maybe, but according to dr. Sarno I have emotions and frustrations well anchored that manifest itself in muscle spasms and tension (MST). To get out of this pain, I am reading his book Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection.

Its principle is simple and is as follows: Sarno’s theory is in part that pain or psychosomatic symptoms are an unconscious “distraction” that helps suppress deep and unconscious emotional issues.

Do you have back, shoulder or arm pain, or fibromyalgia? All medical consultations you had say you have hernia, tendinitis or nothing at all? If so, his book or books are for you.

I was diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation. I was prescribed painkillers, physical activities, specific movements to use daily. And above all I was convinced that it would remain my weak point … for life. What a beautiful emotional crutch to be able to repress my anger and feelings to the ready made physical excuses.

Dr. Sarno’s theory is very interesting. On the contrary, I must understand that muscles, nerves and tendons react to emotions by contracting, spasming and creating pain. “Neck, shoulder and back pain is not a mechanical problem that can be cured by mechanical means, it relates to people’s feelings, their personality and the vicissitudes of life.” – Extract from Healing back pain. The mind-body connection.

Tensions = Emotions generated by the unconscious

Unconscious or subconscious anger and anxiety are therefore the source of the back pain I feel. Well, you know what I do since I know that? I search the skeletons in my closet, and little by little, I find the origin of these angers.

Just to raise awareness, acknowledge, confess is enough… and you know what? Little by little, the pain fades! It’s magical. I believe it, I go for it and continue the process. Wouldn’t you?

I still went to see a chiropractor to work on the mechanical side. I told him about my journey with dr. Sarno. He firmly admitted that it can originate (the herniated disc) from an emotional source. So I add to this : emotions can be unconscious and that sometimes you have to look further more!

I resumed my activities as usual and quietly, life without pain resumes its course. I hope, like the dr. Sarno says, it will be forever. If there is a “relapse” it is because the disorder is even deeper, buried and that my defense mechanism foiled me … again. But as I am positive in nature, that I like to go to the bottom of things and that I am tenacious, I will get there, forever!

Thank you for reading to the end …

Are you struggling with this type of pain? If so, I encourage you to keep an open mind and take the time to read dr Sarno’s book. Tell me about it here in the comment space below.

Tensions = Émotions gĂ©nĂ©rĂ©s par l’inconscient

Sea, Sand and Sun / Mer, Sable et Soleil

Nothing is better than a sunbath at the sea with both feet in the sand!

It feels good to be connected to the earth. To receive so many electrons. This calms the nervous system and improves the mood. Being on vacation is a big help, of course! But being barefoot in the sand is beneficial for many other reasons.

Why are we attracted to the sea and its golden sand? Why do we come back from the sea relaxed, rejuvenated and with a feeling of general well-being?

The effects of the sea, sand and sun are physical as well as psychological.

Such as :

  • reducing stress ; the sound of the waves and the view of the sea.
  • improving sleep quality ; the air and the wind
  • increasing daily vitamin D quotas ; just 30 minutes of exposure is enough.
  • fighting infections ; salt from the sea.
  • multiple opportunities for exercise ; walking, swimming and so much more!
  • beauty treatment for the skin ; sand exfoliate
  • increasing level of iodine in the body ; just by swimming or being in the sea.
  • improvement of the respiratory system ; breathing sea air
  • the connection with oneself ; enjoying, relaxing…
  • If you have the opportunity, the occasion, the possibility to put your feet in the sand, GO! It can only do you good!
  • If you do not have the sea nor the sand, do not hesitate to put your feet in the ground, it will do you almost as much good!

    Christmas Recap (menu and stuff)

If you missed my posts, here is a recap of my suggestions for your holiday menu

    Ideas for…

Merry Christmas, happy holidays and I’ll be back in January!

    Take care

Give a Gift of an experience and create memories

For Christmas, the commercial tradition commands to offer gifts. Fortunately, there is no obligation!

Adults and children have too many things. We become disillusioned and we do not appreciate any of it anymore.

But, if you still want to give, why not offer something to live and experiment rather than an object? How about offering your time?

I know it’s trendy to offer an experience rather than a thing. It is very “zero waste” and I appreciate that aspect but, what drives me more towards this type of gift is that it creates memories. It contributes to well being

Doing an activity with someone you love, creates unforgettable memories. When I live such a moment, I am growing as a person. Personal growth, gratitude and giving, all contributes to my health.

These memories are inked in us for ever, they become part of oneself.

On the contrary, things are just things. I can live or experience something special with it for a while. It can even be useful and help me do things and experiment in life, but I need at least one person to share it with, for it to become a memorable experience. Things and stuff, I have. At one point, it will create waste and I will forget about it. But, the time spent with that friend/brother/kid will last all my life.

I find it personally rewarding to offer an experience that I can live with someone. Of course, that same person can choose to do that activity with someone else.

It’s your choice to make when you offer it.

You can also choose to offer some of your time. This way, you can help that person in different ways. I think it’s a great thing to be able to spend time with people you love, it’s priceless.

    Here are some ideas:

A written promise to babysit for your friend, your brother or your sister

Tickets or a gift certificate/voucher for a cultural activity (cinema, theater, opera, music concert)

Tickets or a gift certificate/voucher for a sports activity (match, ski day, skydiving, hebertism, climbing)

A subscription at a sports center, a health club

Whatever experience/activity you choose to offer, it can also be accompanied by a meal, a snack, a drink, a coffee, a tea in your company.

    For example,

    • This card is a voucher. It is exchangeable for 3 hour of babysitting the week night of your choice so you can enjoy these two movie tickets with the person of your choice. I will come to your house and babysit name.
    • I offer you a night out. First, I invite you to this (name) fine dining restaurant followed by a comedy show. Ticket included!
    • I offer you a special day including a lunch, a movie and a snack afterwards.

If you find it difficult to present such a gift, you can put the voucher in an original recycled box. In fact, you can be very original in your written presentation and in its packaging. You can make an Origami box, you can wrap your box with the furoshiki method using a scarf, fabric, a towel, an old world map and even old newspapers. You can even put it in a basket.

In short, be creative! Have fun, enjoy and be grateful!

    In health,

    Chantal
