Pilates, Stretching & Strength: How I Overcame Lower Back Pain

My personal journey to healing a herniated disc and regaining a strong, resilient body.

For many years, I struggled with severe lower back problems.

In my early twenties, I suffered a debilitating herniated disc that left me bedridden for weeks, completely unable to move. Being twenty-something and trapped in bed is certainly no way to live.

Once I got moving again, osteopaths and chiropractors helped improve my condition significantly—without the need for surgery or injections.

However, it wasn’t until I introduced Pilates into my routine that I experienced true, lasting healing. Now, after more than 10 years of continuous practice, I can confidently say it is the single best form of exercise for back vulnerabilities.

🧘‍♀️ Why Pilates Worked Miracles for Me:

The power of Pilates lies in its holistic technique:

  • Core Strength: Toning the deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor to build a natural supportive brace around the spine.
  • Targeted Flexibility: Stretching tight thighs and hamstrings to relieve tension on the lower back.
  • Mindful Movement: Aligning the posture and moving with intention.

By practicing Pilates 4 times a week for 30 to 45 minutes, my physical health completely transformed.

✈️ Consistency is Key

That being said, my lower back remains a sensitive area that requires gentle upkeep. After a 6-week summer vacation where I swam and played with my kids—but completely skipped Pilates—I began to feel that old weakness creeping back. Long-haul flights of 7 to 8 hours are another gentle reminder of how important core tonus and movement are!

But you know what? I absolutely love Pilates ❤️.

The post-workout feeling of vitality and lightness is so incredible that it’s never a chore. Pilates is an essential part of my routine, my balance, and my daily lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle. Chantal’s Healthy Lifestyle.
