How I wash my hair once a week using simple, natural, and zero-waste ingredients.
Back in 2014, I made the decision to completely ditch store-bought shampoos. My secret to healthy, light, and shiny hair ever since? Plain baking soda and apple cider vinegar!
Washing your hair just once a week is not only possible, but it’s also budget-friendly and incredibly liberating. Here is my exact step-by-step routine:
🧼 Step 1: Cleansing with Baking Soda
- The Prep: I mix a bit of baking soda with water to create a smooth, thin paste.
- Application: I focus only on massaging my scalp. I purposely avoid applying it directly to my lengths, as baking soda can dry them out.
- Let it Sit: I let it rest for a minute or two while I wash my body.
- Rinse: I rinse thoroughly with water. Having long hair, I take extra time here: making sure every last grain is rinsed out is essential, otherwise hair can end up feeling dull, heavy, and lifeless.
🌿 Step 2: Conditioning with Apple Cider Vinegar
Once the baking soda is completely rinsed out, I apply my natural rinse: a blend of water, apple cider vinegar, and a few drops of essential oil.
The vinegar helps seal the hair cuticle, restores natural shine, untangles knots, and balances the scalp’s pH level. I gently massage it into my scalp and down through my lengths before a final rinse.
- My Scent Tip: I swap essential oils depending on my mood, but my top two favorites are Ylang-Ylang (for shine and sweetness) and Rosemary (great for stimulating healthy scalp circulation).
